Family Dinners

Luann asks, "I have a really hard time getting everyone to the table all at once. It seems like I'm serving while they are eating. By the time I sit down, everyone is finished. Can you give some suggestions on how to sit down with my family during the meal?"

Answer: A family gathering around the dinner table is a powerful tool for interaction. So much is shared in just a short amount of time - problems, accomplishments, feelings, and daily activities. You want to be included in all this good conversation. Instead of acting like "Flo" from the local diner, include your family in the presentation of the meal. Here are a few tips:

Have young children help set the table.
Bring the stack of plates and silverware to the table and let them sort out just the right place for plates, knives and napkins.

Bring all the food to the table at once.
Serve from dishes and platters rather than doling out each plate of food from the pans on the stovetop.

Don't get up for refills.
Pour a pitcher of ice tea or bring a carton of milk to the table to refill glasses while you sit at your seat.

Turn off the kitchen TV.
It may take or minute or two, but conversation will occur.
